People hoping to prevent an opioid overdose can now more easily get their hands on Narcan – a nasal spray that can reverse the effects of a potentially deadly overdose – at certain Delaware County grocery stores.
County officials will officially announce Tuesday morning that the antidote will be carried at all ACME pharmacies in the county thanks to a standing prescription issued by the Pennsylvania Physician General.
Narcan has already been credited with saving hundreds of lives in the Philadelphia region. But eight people have already died from heroin overdoses in Delco this year and hundreds have dies over the past five years in the county. [[377922441, C]]
“We’re hoping that those who have someone that is at risk – someone that is really caught by this opioid epidemic – that they have this available just in case of an overdose,” said county councilman Dave White. “They can have the same tools that our police officers have, that our emergency rooms have to save their lives.”
People can purchase Nalaxone at any of ACME’s 10 locations in the county including the Broomall supermarket on Sproul Road where Tuesday’s announcement took place.
Part of the Narcan availability includes have county counselors available to address addiction, said officials.
Besides ACME, CVS pharmacies also carry NARCAN.
